What do you do with clothes you don't want?⁣ ⁣ We make 20-30% more waste in November-December than we do the rest of the year, mostly because of the way we celebrate holidays with mass consumerism. ⁣ ⁣ Clothing is an item that has a super high return rate of 40-50% and yet, is frequently given as a gift. What happens to your clothes when you return it? Unfortunately for many large companies it is cheaper to toss out the item than check to see if it can be resold.⁣ ⁣ Last year I was gifted this gorgeous raincoat but it simply didn't fit me. Instead of attempting to return in, I found someone else who wanted it and passed it on as a gift! I know that sometimes you want to return something to get the money back, but if that's not your primary goal, how else could you pass it along to ensure it doesn't end up in the landfill?⁣ ⁣ [ID: A blue raincoat with pink flowers is laid out on the floor with its tags still attached.]⁣ ⁣ #secondhand #secondhandclothing #thriftshopping #buynothingnew #giveitaway #rehome #recycle #rethink #usedclothing #regift #regifted

Did anyone else buy some Christmas presents for themselves? I splurged and bought some more @shethinx period underwear! I was buying some for someone else and decided to get some too! I typically use reusable cloth pads during the day but I sometimes have leaks at night. Having a full underwear protecting me helps avoid those accidental stains!⁣ ⁣ Thinx comes in 3XS to 3XL sizing which means their brand recognizes that not all bleeding humans (because some people bleed who aren't women!) fit into simply small, medium, and large. If you're looking for a wider range of larger sizes, @aisle has period underwear up to size 5XL which I'll be trying next (once I these ones wear out of course!).⁣ ⁣ Size inclusivity is not something I have historically been good about looking for in brands as I've typically fitted in standard sizes but thanks to @marielle.elizabeth I'm committing to looking for and demanding brands provide clothing that fits ALL sizes!⁣ ⁣ #shethinx #thinx #thinxunderwear #periodunderwear #zerowasteperiod #bleedinghuman #lowwaste #zerowastemenstruation

Does anyone else save their gift bags to use over and over throughout the year? 🎁I never understood the people that would throw them out! Here's a friendly reminder that although you are stuck at home, miss your family, long for companionship, have holiday traditions, may never have spent this day alone - be safe. Wear a mask. Social distance. If you've built a pod around you, stay within that pod! Get tested. Quarantine. ⁣ ⁣ Make sure you are discussing with anyone you plan on seeing how you are going to minimize the risk of exposure or avoid seeing them all together. Cases are on the rise people and if we have any chance of tackling the climate crisis, we first need to get this global pandemic under control so we no longer have to worry about dying every time we leave the house.⁣ ⁣ [ID: A white and yellow picnic blanket is spread out on the grass with three open containers of salad, cooked nuts, and avocado cut up on it. Have you heard of @zerowastewashington? They're an organization in Washington State that works to promote statewide zero waste initiatives and legislation. Before we went into lockdown, they were working hard to draft (and then pass!) legislation that would update the WA State Health Code to officially allow individuals to bring their own containers to stores and restaurants.⁣ ⁣ As many of you may know, the health code tends to be one of the largest barriers grocery stores face to implementing bulk bins and allowing fresh produce to be purchased in cloth bags. Some stores ignore it but others follow the guidelines to the dot and turn away customers with jars. This is especially true for restaurants that have to follow even stricter food preparation guidelines.⁣ ⁣ That's why it's important to get involved in changing the system! Zero Waste Washington sends out a quarterly newsletter with updates on legislation being drafted and how to support its approval into law. For those of you in other states, you may find inspiration from following their lead!⁣ ⁣ [ID: A close-up shot of one white hand holding a glass jar with a black lid and a piece of tape stuck on top. I'm pasting a smile on my face and continuing to move forward. The environment continues to be terrorized. The fossil fuel industry is being bank rolled. Capitalism remains in power. And even with a global pandemic, carbon emissions have not dropped enough world wide to drop below the climate crisis threshold. And yet, I still continue to take action and believe that through collective activism we might be able to make it through.⁣ ⁣ These are organizations I follow, volunteer with, donate to, and support to keep involved in the action. You money is fueling the fossil fuel industry. 😱 Yep. I can pretty much guarantee that if you haven't divested your bank account, credit cards, investments, and retirement accounts, some of your money is in the hands of the oil companies. JP Morgan Chase, for example, is the world's largest funder of fossil fuel projects! Yuck!⁣ ⁣ To be honest, I haven't divested all of my money yet as researching fossil fuel free banks and investment companies takes work. But I can tell you that I have moved all of my savings to a new bank and opened up a checking account that is absolutely NOT in big oil's pocket.⁣ ⁣ @aspiration is a completely online bank that guarantees their investment practices are free of any nasty oil! They're a certified B-Corporation and participate in 1% for the Planet! They also automatically purchase carbon offsets every time I buy gasoline - wow! With Aspiration's Plant Your Change program, you can automatically round up every purchase to the nearest dollar and donate the money to their tree planting efforts!⁣ ⁣ My debit card is also made from recycled plastic 😆⁣ ⁣ This isn't a sponsored ad - simply a PSA for those of you searching to divest your money and move to a better bank! Instead of funding the fossil fuel industry this Black Friday, why not invest in a sustainable bank instead?⁣ ⁣ [ID: A white hand is holding up a debit card that is a beautiful mix of greena and blue colors with the shape of a forest on it and a start covering the chip. Like many of you, I have a mixed relationship with Black Friday. I grew up going to Fred Meyer at 6 a.m. every year to buy new clothes and loved it. As I learned more about the environmental impacts of overconsumption though, the illusion started to fade.⁣ ⁣ Now I like to think I have a more appropriate relationship with the day. In that, if I need something, I take advantage of the discounts that are available from zero waste, ethical businesses that I purchase from anyways throughout the year. If I don't need anything, I don't buy it. Period.⁣ ⁣ I've compiled a list of the companies I love and support that are also offering discounts in case you have been waiting to have the opportunity to try them too (or this simply serves as your reminder to go ahead and buy what's on your list!). I've always loved green bean casserole but primarily ate the french fried onions on top! My little sister would always pick them off too!⁣ ⁣ We've always bought the pre-made French Friend Onions in plastic containers though. It wasn't until last year that my mom got inspired and suggested we make them ourselves. It was such a fun project! Not only did we avoid the plastic, they were tastier, cheaper, and probably contained more salt (haha!) than store bought. The experience also gave my mom and I quality time together while we cooked.⁣ ⁣ Do you make your own french fried onions for green bean casserole? I've shared the recipe we use on the blog!⁣ ⁣ P.S. This is not an endorsement to get together for Thanksgiving with your extended family! You can make yourself green bean casserole and stay home. Or simply make it for those you already live with! Or drop it off! Now is not the time to put everyone at risk while cases are on the rise. Bake yummy food. Eat yummy food. Alternatives to buying books on AMAZON:⁣ ⁣ 1. Bookshop.org⁣ 2. Buy Nothing Groups⁣ 3. Craigslist⁣ 4. Little Free Libraries⁣ 5. Thrift Stores⁣ 6. Independent Bookstores⁣ 7. Friends and family!⁣ 8. Your Local Library⁣ ⁣ Where do you buy your books? I stopped buying from Amazon a long time ago because Jeff Bezos doesn't need my money. I also very rarely buy books at all because they, too, have a carbon footprint. Whenever I am interested in reading something, I typically check it out from my library or listen to the audio book. I don't avoid all forms of plastic anymore. I've loosened the expectations I have on myself which has allowed me to focus more energy on environmental activism and less on the small bits of plastic I'm consuming. Buying tortillas is one of the ways I still consume single use plastic - or at least, it's 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘦𝘥 to be single use.⁣ ⁣ If you take a closer look at this picture you will notice that the bag is not actually filled with tortillas but rather tomatoes! 🍅Tortilla bags are perfect for reusing and make wonderful freezer bags! I won't always avoid plastic but I also won't automatically throw it away once it's served its intended purpose. ⁣ ⁣ Anyone else saving their tortilla bags over here? 😉⁣ ⁣ [ID: A white hand is holding a Buenatural Organic Flour Tortilla bag that is stuffed to the brim with frozen tomatoes harvested from Jenica's garden this summer.]⁣ ⁣ #reuseplastic #ditchthedisposables #recycle #repurpose #reimagine #lesswaste #zerowaste #lessplasticwaste

Recycling is super hard to do right! No one city has the same rules as the next and there is a lot of misinformation out there about what is recyclable and what isn't. Ever tried to google what you could put in your curbside bin? STOP. You'll need to go to your city specific page because recycling simply doesn't have any universal truths.⁣ ⁣ Take this butter container for example. You, like me, might have assumed for years that this container was recyclable in Portland in paper recycling. You might have thought, "huh, it looks like paper!". Well...you would be wrong. In Portland you can't recycle any of the "frozen food" containers such as this butter box as the paper-looking container actually has contaminates in it that mess up the recycling stream. ⁣ ⁣ So where should it go? The garbage! This example is only one of many times I've learned that I've been recycling something wrong. Or that it can't be recycled in my community at all.⁣ ⁣ If you're in Portland, make sure to follow @recycleornot to check if something is recyclable. If you're in Seattle, use the Seattle Recycle & Garbage app. Vancouver, WA has a RecycleRight app too! And if you're anywhere else, look it up! Not on google - get the info straight from your waste management company!⁣ ⁣ Recycling is hard folks. ⁣ ⁣ #recycle #recycleright #recyclingishard #nationalrecyclingday #nationalrecyclingweek #plasticrecycling #optimisticrecycling #wishfulrecycling #optimisticrecycler

COMMUNITY RESILIENCE⁣ ⁣ These last few months have taught me a lot and peeled the curtain back on some issues I was ignorant to (which I recognize has to do with my privilege as a white, cis-gendered, financially stable, straight, woman). ⁣ ⁣ One thing that has really hit home is the need for mutual aid and a strong community. Corporations won't protect us and often times our own government doesn't make decisions that are best for the people and the planet. ⁣ ⁣ A way I see us building stronger communities is by creating more coops. We need to share ownership in the businesses in our community. I'm currently a member of two coops in Seattle including @pccmarkets and @central_coop 🍅 In Bellingham I was a member of @communityfoodcoop and then a member of @peoplesfoodcoop in Portland. ⁣ ⁣ As Black Friday commercials begin to fill your screens, consider where you are spending your money - and how we can make coops more equitable and accessible to all! As being a member of a coop is also a sign of privilege given they usually cost money to join and have higher food prices. How can we build community stability and value our local farmers in ways that don't leave some community members out based on their financial position?⁣ ⁣ [ID: A white hand holds up a blue grocery card with the words PCC Community Markets member. When I'm looking into a new company, I first start by looking at their certifications. Although their certifications don’t tell me everything, they can shed light on whether outside groups have approved of a company’s environmental policies. The B-Corp certification is one that stands out. ⁣ ⁣ Corporations become B-Corp certified once they complete an assessment that evaluates their overall positive impact from their employees and their products to their environmental impact and community involvement. B-Corps are legally bound to their commitments and have their exact scores displayed online for anyone to see. I have looked up companies to see how they rank even within the range of B-Corps as some just make the cut-off and others shine above the rest!⁣ ⁣ Here are some of the B-Corp Certified companies that I LOVE:⁣ ⁣ @frankieandjos⁣ @avocadomattress⁣ @aspiration⁣ @allbirds⁣ @moonvalleyorganics⁣ ⁣ Have you heard of B-Corp Certification? SPREAD THE WORD!⁣ ⁣ Giving talks and workshops the last four years has helped me learn a lot about the zero waste movement. I've enjoyed connected with my community, being challenged in my practices, and finding new ways of engaging my audience. ⁣ ⁣ Today I partnered with Marvell Technologies for their Go Green Event where I provided three back to back presentations on the Zero Waste Movement to their employees. People tuned in from around the world to watch! It made me realize just how much I have missed these events and want to get more on the books. Question for bulk buyers: do any of you have severe allergies? A workshop attendee asked what they can do to avoid contamination in the bulk bins and I honestly didn't have an answer.⁣ ⁣ When it comes to severe allergies like to peanuts, it probably makes sense to buy all your snacks in packages that can be completely nut free. Buying from bulk bins just simply can't guarantee that. Are there any people with allergies that have found a way around this? Thoughts?⁣ ⁣ This is one of those situations where we must recognize that plastic serves a purpose and isn't the ultimate evil in this world. Corporations are the problem! Fossil fuels are the problem! Capitalism! Did you know aluminum is one of the most easily recycled materials on the planet? It maintains its strength indefinitely meaning it can be recycled over and over again back into the same product. Unlike plastic which degrades over time and has to be "downcycled", aluminum truly can be RE-cycled.⁣ ⁣ What most people don't know however is that mining aluminum is extremely resource intensive. Which means that IF you don't recycle your can, it is actually one of the most carbon intensive "single use" items out there. Simply purchasing something in aluminum over plastic doesn't mean that you're making the most environmentally friendly choice then. You have to RECYCLE that can for it to be any better than the plastic bottle.⁣ ⁣ All this to say, single use has its flaws. It's best to avoid single use as much as possible, especially if you are in an area that doesn't provide adequate recycling systems. When you do choose to buy aluminum canned beverages, do your absolute best to recycle them. Remember collecting cans as a kid to turn in for money? Maybe it's time to bring that trend back too...Oh, and bottle take-back programs like in Oregon dramatically increase recycling rates! Did you know that close to 95% of single use bottles are being collected for recycling in Portland now because of their bottle program?⁣ ⁣ [ID: Jenica is wearing a polka dot dress holding up an aluminum La Croix. Who else wants to just get in bed today and not get out?⁣ ⁣ I haven't been doing great. Honestly my anxiety hasn't been this high since I went on medication and I've been struggling with pessimism and waves of depression.⁣ ⁣ The planet feels fucked. Even if our election results in Biden winning, it's hard to imagine his policies being anywhere as aggressive as they need to be to fight the climate crisis, social inequity, hunger, homelessness, criminal justice reform, health care disparities...you name it. CHECK YOUR BALLOT STATUS ✉️ In 2016 1.4% of mail in ballots were rejected in the general election nationwide. In 2018, 1.0% were again rejected. Voter suppression is real folks. One of the many ways it appears is in the form of rejecting ballots that do not have the correct signature. Some states also require a security envelope and others don't - but your ballot could be rejected if you don't follow the rules exactly. These guidelines don't reduce voter fraud, they reducing VOTING. In Washington State, visit Voter.VoteWA.gov to make sure your ballot was ACCEPTED. If you live in another state, go a quick google search to find out what platform your election officials use. Vote. Vote. Vote. Fuck Trump. Biden isn’t my ideal candidate. He sure doesn’t represent all my values nor have nearly progressive enough standpoints on healthcare! But he’s not Trump. And my hope is that as President, Biden can be pushed by the progressives even farther to the left. That we can begin to tackle climate change in meaningful ways. Maybe I’m being overly optimistic? Hopefully we get the opportunity to find out... Also, before you comment that I should “take the high road” and avoid using the word FUCK, go read The Seven Necessary Sins for Women and Girls by Mona Eltahawy to understand how the patriarch teaches women that swearing is not acceptable as yet another way of publicly oppressing them and drawing attention away from the true issue at hand.
