The President, Women Arise for Change Initiative, Joe Okei-Odumakin, has urged the Inspector-General Police, Mohammed Adamu, to sack all policemen who impregnated women out of wedlock. . Okei-Odumakin was reacting to the sacking of an unmarried female corporal, Olajide Omolola, who was dismissed for getting pregnant. . The activist, who spoke on a PUNCH Live programme on Thursday, described the dismissal of Omolola as “pure discrimination”. . According to her, many male operatives in the Nigeria Police Force have at one time or the other impregnated ladies whom they were not married to. . She stressed that the Force must respect the equality of rights, and accord same regard to both genders in the Force. . Okei-Odumakin said, “It is quite insensitive. The decision of the police authorities typifies the assault encountered by the average Nigerian woman in their workplace. We should be able to interrogate the system and also find out if the leadership within the system can also provide the number of men within the police force who have impregnated women out of wedlock and that have also served similar punishment.” . She noted that “it is quite sad knowing that at this point in the history of our country, an institution like the Nigeria Police Force” could slam such heavy punishment on a policewoman. . The PUNCH had earlier reported that Nigerians expressed outrage over the sacking of Omolola. . They slammed the police over what they described as a discriminatory law and called on rights group to fight for the woman. . The police, in a wireless message with reference number CJ:4161/EKS/IY/Vol.2/236, DTO:181330/01/2021 obtained by The PUNCH, said Omolola was dismissed for getting pregnant while unmarried. . The signal originated from the Department of Finance and Administration in Ado Ekiti and was addressed to the Divisional Police Officer at Iye Ekiti, where Omolola was based. . The chief financial officer in Ekiti was asked to relay the information to the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System to ensure that her salary was stopped. -- -- #nigerianpolice

The Anambra State Police Command has reportedly arrested controversial prophet, Onyeze Jesus, real name Onyebuchi Okocha, the founder of Children of Light Anointing Ministries located at Nkpor, Idemili North local government area of the state. This is coming days after the Anambra State Government condemned the 'criminal and indecent' conduct of the prophet after a viral video showed him and his followers in a river, where they bathed naked while he sprayed them with N50 notes. A source who pleaded anonymity said the prophet was reportedly arrested on Wednesday, January 27. “Onyeze Jesus is in police custody. He was arrested on Wednesday, 27th January 2021, and will likely be arraigned for various offences on Thursday, 28th January 2021." the source told Anambra Broadcasting Service, ABS. Meanwhile, spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, Haruna Mohammed, confirmed the arrest but declined to give further comment. Recall that on Monday, the Anambra State Government through a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenement, Don Adinuba, said that Onyeze Jesus promotes superstitions and strife by telling his gullible followers that their misfortunes are caused by family members, relatives and business associates. The statement also condemned the destruction of the naira notes by the pastor, an action which contravenes the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN Act of 2007. Following condemnation and backlash over the viral video, the prophet apologised to Nigerians and the Anambra State for abusing Naira notes and sharing nude videos of people online.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari’s (retd.) appointment of service chiefs on Tuesday violated a 2013 judgment of a Federal High Court, Abuja, checks by The PUNCH on Wednesday revealed. . The judgment, which was delivered by Justice Adamu Bello on July 2, 2013, stated that it was mandatory for the President to obtain the confirmation of the National Assembly for the appointment of the service chiefs. . But the President, who on Tuesday appointed service chiefs including the Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Lucky Irabor; the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Ibrahim Attahiru; the Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral A.Z Gambo, and the Chief of Air Staff, Air-Vice Marshal Isiaka Amao, did not seek the National Assembly’s approval. . The PUNCH also gathered that Buhari had no intention of sending the names of the service chiefs to the National Assembly for confirmation. . There was an indication to this effect as the President’s spokesman, Femi Adesina, in a statement on Wednesday addressed the new heads of armed forces with their new posts instead of in acting capacities if Buhari had the intention of sending their names to the National Assembly for confirmation. . Recall that Justice Bello while delivering a judgment on a suit filed by Mr Festus Keyamo, SAN, who is now the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, declared that the appointment of then service chiefs by former President Goodluck Jonathan was null and void. . The service chiefs affected then included the Chief of Army Staff, Lt-General Azubuike Ihejirika; the Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Alex Badeh and the Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Ezeoba. . Justice Bello had stated, “It is clear that under Section 18(1) and (4) of the Armed Forces Act, the President in appointing such officers as the ‘service chiefs’ is expected to consult with the Chief of Defence Staff and the Forces Council but such appointment must be subject to the confirmation by the National Assembly.” --
Authorities in China have introduced anal swabs as a new type of coronavirus test that could detect the virus more accurately as they struggle to contain rising infections ahead of the Lunar New Year celebrations. This comes after local outbreaks in the country led to China shutting off many of its northern cities. Before, coronavirus tests were mostly being carried out with nose and throat swabs. However, the new anal test involves a swab being inserted around two to three centimetres (0.8 to 1.2 inches) into the rectum and being rotated multiple times. The swab is then taken out and sealed in a sample container, a process reported to take around 10 seconds. Li Tongzeng, a senior doctor from Beijing’s Youan hospital, says the anal swab method “can increase the detection rate of infected people”. He says this is because virus traces remain longer in the anus than in the respiratory tract, where you collect nasal and throat swabs. He told CCTV: "We found that some asymptomatic patients tend to recover quickly. It's possible that there will be no trace of the virus in their throat after three to five days. "But the virus lasts longer from the samples taken from the patient's digestive tract and excrement, compared to the ones taken from the respiratory tract". News of the new anal swabs has been met with criticism from some experts. Yang Zhanqiu, a deputy director of the pathogen biology department at Wuhan University, told state media, Global Times that nasal and throat swabs remain more efficient tests as the virus is a respiratory disease. He adds: "There have been cases concerning the coronavirus testing positive in a patient's excrement, but no evidence has suggested it had been transmitted through one's digestive system".

Veteran Nollywood actress, Joke Silva, has shared a part of her life she seldom talks about which is that she is an adopted child. During an interview on Funmi Iyanda’s Public Eye, the screen diva revealed how she found out that she was an adopted child when she was about 10 years old. The 59-year-old actress said that she was shattered when she found her adoption papers. She said, “It is something that one is just getting to the point where one is just sharing it in the public arena. It is something I found out when I was much younger because mine was a secret adoption. When I mean secret, I mean it was legal because it was done through the Red Cross and all that; but it was not something that my parents discussed. “My aunt wanted me to travel with her to Kenya and my mother was not around so she said ‘do you know where your passport is?’ and I told her ‘yes. I know where my mother keeps all the important documents.’ I go to this important suitcase that has all the document. I found my passport and also found my adoption certificate. I was about 10 or 11 years and it was a bit earth-shattering. It was tough. You know how you are, you are very sensitive as a child in the sense that there was just something in it because if it was something they wanted to discuss, they would have discussed it with me but there was just nobody to discuss it with.” She noted that after her discovery she did not inform her parents and they did not have the discussion till years later. Silva said she found it interesting that her mother found it easier to discuss the topic with her son. The actress said, “Over the years, we got to a particular point where we were able to discuss it especially me and my mother. We discussed it at some point. What was actually interesting is that she found it easier to discuss it with my older son than she did with me. “When I found the document, I did not discuss it with them for a long time because I realized that there was just something instinctive in me that knew that if it was okay to discuss it, I would have been told about it. But my mum was not comfortable with talking about it so I did not bring it up.”

‘Nnamdi Kanu’s Days Are Numbered’ — Arewa Youths Ask FG To Work With Interpol To Arrest IPOB Leader The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum, AYCF, has declared that the days of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, are numbered. AYCF National President, Yerima Shettima made the declaration in an exclusive chat with Daily Post. Shettima said the Nigerian government should devise a means to arrest and repatriate Kanu to face his trial. He pointed out that Kanu was taking advantage of the unemployment rate in Nigeria to recruit people and instigate them against other Nigerians. According to Shettima: “In a normal society that rabble rouser who claims to be a leader from nowhere should not be taken seriously. “But unfortunately for us, we have a society with high rate of unemployment, bad economy and high rate of crime, so it’s easy for Kanu to recruit people and instigate them against innocent Nigerians. “But I know his days are numbered because this can’t continue and as far as I’m concerned, I have never seen him as a serious human being. “Nigerian government must devise a means through interpol to get him arrested and made to face his trial.”
