In a diary entry dated September 4,1883, a young Darwin Martin longingly wrote: “The sweetest song on earth is ‘Home, Sweet Home.’” Martin’s expressive words resonate as clearly today as they did when he first penned those sentiments. On this Christmas Day, we send to each of you wishes of peace and joy from our home, sweet home to yours. #martinhouse #franklloydwright #architecture #christmas #holidayseason #lights #homesweethome

The Martins were Christian Scientists and celebrated Christmas. Diary entries and interviews with family members have captured some of the family activities from various years. In 1911, Darwin read aloud Washington Irving's "Christmas Eve." The following year, daughter Dorothy filled everyone's stockings with jokes. And in 1926, the Christmas morning breakfast table setting included a poem at each chair, written by Dorothy and customized for each member of the family. Mealtime included dishes such as "two average turkeys" and pies. It's heartwarming to imagine the family seated at the beautiful Martin House dining room table. 📷 Digital collections, University at Buffalo libraries #martinhouse #franklloydwright #architecture #diningroom #family #tradition #christmas #holidays #buffalo #buffalove #WrightInBuffalo

“I still recall the beautiful fall day and all of the dignitaries in attendance as we celebrated the completion of the Carriage House, Conservatory, and Pergola reconstruction. I remember thinking ‘Buffalo did it – we really did it.’” This year marks the 20th anniversary of service for Debbie Houck – our December volunteer in the spotlight. Her countless hours on site have been spent assisting in our Museum Store in the beautiful Carriage House. Sincere thanks to Debbie – and all of our volunteers – for continued commitment during this most challenging year. Take a look inside the Martin's coatroom. A space not explored on a tour, this area includes the only bathroom on the first floor used by the family and their guests. The coatroom is behind Darwin's office and visible as you make your way to the kitchen. #ThrowbackThursday The Martins were well-known to have given gifts throughout the community. Cora Herrick, Isabelle’s companion pictured here with Isabelle, recorded in 1912 that she spent the entire day delivering gifts, which often included cut flowers from the on-site greenhouse. Given the blooms we enjoyed during the first full year of the landscape restoration, we can only imagine the joy when receiving a bouquet from the Martin estate! #martinhouse #franklloydwright #landscape #garden #flowers #bouquet #gifts #community #joy

At some point after Darwin Martin’s death, the Wright-designed kitchen cabinetry was removed from the Martin House and transferred by remaining relatives to a family property on nearby Highland Avenue. In 2003, the current owner of the home returned the built-in cabinetry, which had been modified over the years. Artisans restored the original cabinets, which were reinstalled in February 2013. The Martin House restoration story includes many significant moments like this one. The generosity of many continues to move us forward. Today, #GivingTuesday, is a day to celebrate and honor this community effort. With the nation and our local community still in the grips of the national health crisis, we have made the decision to temporarily close the Martin House to public tours. During the past few months, many visitors from our Western New York community explored the Martin House for the first time, and the public art display among the landscape created a unique interpretive, outdoor experience when many needed it most. During this second closure, we will continue to dedicate resources to serve our community including an exciting new virtual reality tour program for school groups and the soon-to-be-announced launch of a docent-led virtual tour, allowing us to open the doors virtually to visitors from all over the world. Thank you for your continued support throughout this challenging year. Visit martinhouse.org/shop this week to take advantage of an online store sale – with lots of new items added – and consider a gift to the annual fund during this challenging time. #martinhouse #franklloydwright #architecture #InThisTogether #ItsOurJob #buffalocares #shoplocal #supportlocal #buffalo #cityofgoodneighbors #buffalove

Frank Lloyd Wright was inspired by the art and culture of Japan, traveling there for the first time in the spring of 1905 as the Martin House was under construction. Wright soon became a major collector and dealer in ukiyo-e, color woodblock prints. Wright prescribed such prints for many of his Prairie-era clients, including the Martin family. The Martins’ collection consisted of 24 ukiyo-e prints, including exquisite examples by Andō Hiroshige, Isoda Koryūsai, Katsukawa Shunshō, Kitao Shigemasa , Kitagawa Utamaro, and Eisho Chokosai. Today, reproductions of these prints grace the walls of the Martin House in order to preserve the original works on paper, which are delicate and highly-sensitive to light. Some of these prints are captured beautifully on a set of notecards at martinhouse.org/shop, the perfect gift for someone who loves to spread joy with words. #martinhouse #franklloydwright #restoration #preservation #historichome #japaneseart #ukiyoe #history #buffalo

"I am not a 'masterpiece man' – the next one I am going to do is always the best. When a man points to his masterpiece, he is finished. The large Copper Beech tree in front of the Martin House was planted in 1905 and still stands in its original space. The European Copper Beech tree was popular at the time, and the Martins absolutely loved their trees. November is a glorious time to see her, but city living is hard on trees – so please be careful not to get too close to her roots. She is very special. Tours are happening today through the weekend, with sun predicted for much of the time to enjoy the color on the leaves and the other blooms still in the landscape. There is also a Wright Night on Monday evening! A little Halloween scare! Take a look at "The Jewett Gardens," an apartment complex built around 1960 that cut across the middle of the estate. But these apartments most likely saved the main house when the owner at that time sold off part of the property to keep up with expenses. Today, with restoration and reconstruction complete, we welcome all of you to visit the beautiful Martin House estate and hear more about its storied past. Tours are available this weekend, and we promise no tricks - only treats! Happy Halloween! In 2017, the Martin House received an extraordinary gift from the @uviclegacygalleries , British Columbia, CA. The University of Victoria returned seven original Wright-designed art glass panels from the Martin House – which were installed within their historical context inside the house to be viewed and experienced for generations to come. This generous gift is being honored with a 2020 Wright Spirit Award during the @savewrightflwbc virtual conference in November. A total of eleven Wright Spirit Awards covering four categories will be presented during an online gala, and we are thrilled that seven of these awards are connected to the Martin House! "It is those little things that you do and that you do with your feeling and heart that are really constructive." – Frank Lloyd Wright, 1954 If you look closely at all of the stunning art glass on and inside the pier clusters, you might miss one little thing – the small art glass windows tucked on each side to fill the gap when the larger windows are in open position. Always an honor to have a group of Girl Scouts on site to earn a patch during the Architecture in Nature program!
