I love having lean protein, vegetables and a tasty gravy and two little pigs in blankets and a Yorkshire pud wonโ€™t kill my healthy eating as itโ€™s all in moderation. This way of eating is the norm for me even throughout the holidays. Donโ€™t get me wrong I enjoy the naughty foods as much as the next person but I will only have them in moderation so I donโ€™t spoil my hard work. Letโ€™s do this... Just because it Xmas doesnโ€™t mean your health and fitness should take a back seat or fall down altogether! Here are 5 tips to staying on track this Christmas: ๐ŸŽ„1- Allow yourself the odd treat and donโ€™t feel guilty for it as you have earned it and as long as you stay active you can burn it off. ๐ŸŽ„2- Keep up your daily exercise even if itโ€™s just a walk or a dance around the kitchen rather than a full workout, just keep moving that body! ๐ŸŽ„3- Remember to keep drinking your daily water uptake of at least 2 litres a day, this helps you stay feeling full for longer and remember itโ€™s often the case that you are thirsty not hungry anyway. (And before you ask, NO, alcohol doesnโ€™t count towards your water intake, sorry ๐Ÿ˜ณ) stay hydrated! ๐ŸŽ„4- When you choose a treat like a pudding, make it a tasty one that you will really enjoy rather than just picking at anything you see. You will enjoy it so much more and avoid eating rubbish food too. ๐ŸŽ„5- Make a plan before the holidays begin that allows you to indulge (in moderation of course) and stick to it so you donโ€™t feel guilty if you go mad as itโ€™s all in the plan. HOW TO STAY MOTIVATED At times it can be hard to stay motivated and on track, especially at the moment. Life and negative self-talk can get in the way of you reaching your goals. Try my top tips below to stay motivated: Try a mood board โ€“ A mood board consists of images and words that inspire and motivate you. You can create a mood board for each of the areas of your life you need motivation in. E.g. If you need motivating to eat your five a day, make a mood board full of images of your favourite fruits and veggies or recipes they appear in. Cut images out of magazines and stick them onto a board to hang in your kitchen. Do things in advance that will help you stick to your healthy choices. - This could mean laying out your gym kit in the evening so that itโ€™s ready for the morning, or meal prepping on a Sunday so that you have a weeksโ€™ worth of healthy meals ready to go.โ€“ thereโ€™s little point aiming to lose 4 stone or going from zero to 10km in 2 weeks. Having unrealistic, unreachable goals is only going to drain you of motivation. Remind yourself of your goals and why you want to achieve them โ€“ Keep coming back to the goal you wrote earlier and remember why you chose that for yourself. Have a plan that you set out each week to help you achieve your goal. Tick off each thing you do on your plan! - This energises you and helps you become more focused. It is also important not to be too hard on yourself if you do not achieve something that week. Leg Day GOALS! How will you achieve your goals? Now you have set your goal the next thing you can do is make your choice on how you will achieve your goal. What one thing can you include or change to achieve what you want. It can be tempting to choose lots of different things to change all at once, but this can be overwhelming. It is better to make one choice at a time, focus on this choice and create a plan to achieve it before moving on to your next one. It is important that the choices you make should be relevant to you and what you want to achieve, not what others think you should be doing. Take some time to think about what you really want to achieve and why. Write your choice down so you can see it in black and white. Use strong positive language rather than negative words. For example, you could write โ€˜My choice is to workout 3 times a week to help me feel healthy and energised. I will do this by planning in my diary my workouts each week and set reminders. I will treat each workout as an important appointment and not cancel themโ€™ or โ€˜My choice is to reduce the negative voice in my head so I start my day in a positive way. I will write a list of affirmations and place them by my bed so the first thing I do before I get up is to read them out loud to myself and believe the words I am sayingโ€™. Pilates workout today! Keeping fit and healthy every day is important to me as it keeps me mobile, upbeat and ready to take on the day. I feel meh and sluggish if I donโ€™t move my body every day. Your daily workout doesnโ€™t have to mean you are jumping up and down or going for 5k runs it can be anything from walking, Yoga type stretching, light weight training or short bursts of cardio. As long as you keep moving and help to raise your heart rate a little each day you will notice a huge difference in your fitness and energy levels. Having a goal will give you something clear to aim for and to keep you focused. It doesnโ€™t have to be anything big, it doesnโ€™t even have to be anything to do with weight loss or fitness. It can be something as simple as going for a 30 min walk each day or clearing out that messy cupboard you have been putting off! The key thing is that it is something that is achievable at this time. It is important to write them down and keep returning to them. Place your written goals where you can see them on a daily basis to stay focused and on track. You may, or may not, have heard of SMART goal setting before, but SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Timed. The SMART model is a simple way to order your goals. S- Specific โ€“ When setting a goal make sure itโ€™s specific and not general. For example: โ€˜I will drop 1 dress size in 8 weeksโ€™ is specific, rather than โ€˜I want to lose weightโ€™, which is very general. M- Measurable โ€“ In the example I used above, dropping a dress size can certainly be measured, so this will let you know exactly how far off from your goal you are, and if you need to make any changes to help you stay on track. It also allows you to clearly see when youโ€™ve achieved your goal. A- Achievable โ€“ If your goal was โ€˜I want to lose 1 dress size in 7 daysโ€™ then this goal is completely unachievable (unless you are doing something very drastic and unhealthy for you!) and therefore isnโ€™t going to motivate you to even attempt it. So, while it can be something to challenge you, it shouldnโ€™t be impossible. R- Relevant โ€“ Your goal has to be relevant to you, if not then itโ€™s less likely to motivate you. Why do you want to achieve it? How will it feel when you do achieve it? T- Timed โ€“ If your goal is not timed, then your actions can be put off and motivation becomes lost. Remember to keep the time element realistic otherwise you are setting yourself up to not achieve it from the start. What are your goals and how are you going to achieve them? โค๏ธโค๏ธ
