๐ŸŒ€ Early today, Tropical Storm Elsa became the first Atlantic hurricane of 2021. Current projections estimate she will hit Florida late Monday, going into Tuesday morning, with the greatest impact to the Keys and the Gulf coast. Even though the exact path is unknown, we have to make preparations to evacuate.โฃ
โฃ
๐ŸŒ€ So what to do? The tricky part is all of Florida could be pummeled by rain and gusts, also leading to floods and strong storm surges along the coasts. If youโ€™re familiar with RVs, even moderate storms can feel violent, so our main priority is to get out of the Keys on Sunday if Elsa stays on her current path. Anywhere inland in Florida will be safer, and we want to exit the Keys before there's a chaotic mass exodus.โฃ
โฃ
๐ŸŒ€ Have you ever experienced severe weather while traveling in an RV? Share your stories and tips, and stay tuned to see where Elsa takes us.โฃ

Hikers can wade across a narrow section of Terlingua Creek to reach the 1500-foot walls of Santa Elena. This moderate hike is a Big Bend classic, located in the western side of the park, and the steep walls are made of limestone. In case youโ€™re concerned about getting wet, the water level will vary and can be thigh-deep, as it was when we were here. Thereโ€™s also a lot of thick mud, so we recommend taking off your shoes to avoid losing them. โฃ

Only around 1.5 miles round trip, this hike is relatively easy even on a hot day, and depending on what time you start, the high canyon walls might give you a break from the relentless sun. the real elevation gain is after you cross the creek, where the trail turns upward, through steps and short switchbacks, before curving back down along the banks of the Rio Grande.โฃ

Check conditions before you go to make sure the creek hasnโ€™t flooded. And look around for wildlife! Big Bendโ€™s diverse residents can be seen throughout the park. โฃ

Making a Texas hiking list? Donโ€™t miss Big Bend!โฃ
โฃ
Our last post featured the highest natural point in Texas, Guadalupe Peak. Here in Big Bend National Park, the highest point is Emory Peak. Interestingly enough, itโ€™s the longest short trail weโ€™ve ever hiked! โฃ
โฃ
Hereโ€™s why: To get to Emory Peak, you have to first hike 3.5 miles along the Pinnacles trail. The actual hike to Emory is only about 3.5 miles total, but because you can only get to it via Pinnacles, the total hike comes to ~10.5 miles. โฃ
โฃ
The best part is the final section of ~25 feet requires some scrambling over exposed rocks, so scout around first and make sure you take a route that wonโ€™t put you in a precarious situation. Oh, and there are two peaks side by side at the end, and they both have solar panels and antennae at the top. We first ascended the peak on the left, but that oneโ€™s not Emory. So we hiked back down and tried the peak on the right (which does look taller once you step back a bit). THAT one is Emory!โฃ
โฃ
One more tip: Carefully choose your route to climb back down; the trail isnโ€™t labeled here, and some of the options will take you down very steep, sheer segments of rock. We found it easier to keep to the left of the peak. โฃ
โฃ
๐Ÿ‘‰ Swipe to see a photo of the peak. โฃ
โฃ
Has anyone else climbed the wrong peak when attempting Emory or another hike? Thankfully it was a mistake that only cost us a few minutes. โฃ

When we searched Guadalupe National Park before visiting, we learned most of the park was closed due to a fire! The fire started by lightning less than 3 weeks prior to our visit, and it had spread to nearly 2,000 acres before it was contained. Only the Pine Springs Visitor Center was open, and only FOUR HIKES were accessible. โฃ

One easy and time-saving habit when visiting the national parks is to go online and visit the national park website (nps.gov) and look up the park youโ€™re planning to visit. Itโ€™s a good way to current conditions and warnings, as well as requirements (like reservations). During the peak of COVID, masks were required everywhere, and many parks started to enforce reservations to stagger the entry and control the volume of visitors. โฃ

Also called the Compass Barrel because of the way it often leans toward the southwest, they favor this direction because it minimizes the amount their body is exposed to the hot midday sun. These guys can live 50-100 years, and while most of them only grow to about 2-4 feet tall, they can grow as high as 10 feet! Unfortunately, they are susceptible to tipping over before they can get very tall, due to the shallow root system.โฃ

The reason why some cacti have this crowning feature isnโ€™t known, but itโ€™s thought to either be a genetic mutation or the effect of a trauma, like a lightning strike. The cristate feature, while relatively rare, isnโ€™t unique to barrel cacti - any cactus can have this interesting top. These guys can live 50-100 years, and while most of them only grow to about 2-4 feet tall, they can grow as high as 10 feet! Unfortunately, they are susceptible to tipping over before they can get very tall, due to the shallow root system. Pic 2 is especially unusual because itโ€™s cristate, or crested, on top. There are people who travel around in search of these majestic plants, and thereโ€™s even a cristate society! โฃ โฃ ๐Ÿ‘‰ Join us this week to learn a bit more about prickly desert natives. Have you ever seen a crusted cactus? โฃ .โฃ .โฃ .โฃ #nationalparkgeek #deserts #visitarizona #nationalparkservice #desertvibes #saguaro #cactusinstagram #cactusworld #cactuslovers #tucsonarizona #tucsonaz #cactusinstagram #cactusmania #cactusofinstagram #traveltales #visittucson #cactusphoto #cactusaddict #travelsafe #travelinglife #nationalparkgeek #factstho #interestingfacts #natureisamazing #natureisart #touristattraction #exploreoutdoors #gooutdoors #wandermore #wandergram
