Did you know that there is a lot of investment in recycling going on around Australia at the moment? Following the introduction of new regulations that will restrict the export of glass, plastics, tyres and paper and cardboard, the Federal Government is investing $190 million in the Recycling Modernisation Fund to build our capacity to recycle these materials here in Australa. Each state is responsble for alloating these funds to local projects. For example, in their first round of funding @SustainabilityVictoria awarded $8.1million across seven plastics and glass projects that will collectively process over 200,000 tonnes of glass and 23,000 tonnes of plastic each year. This means we'll see more jars, bottles and fibreglass made of recycled glass and plastic! Each state has different criteria for funding and we are more than happy to to discuss what funding could be available to suit your project in your state. We can even help you write the application! Get in touch with us to find out more about recycling and resource recovery grants. #recyclemore #wasteless #recyclinginfrastructure #circulareconomy #recyclinggrants #recyclingmodernisationfund
Our Waste Less consultant Grace has a summer job at @citywinerybne and of course, she's been keeping an eye on their waste practices. She has been pleasantly surprised to come across a restaurant venue with such a strong commitment to creating less waste! We know that keeping food waste out landfill has two enormous benefits of avoiding methane generation and recovering nutritious organic material that can fuel our food production. In the City Winery kitchen, food waste is separated for collection by @Loop.Growers who turn it into compost to nourish their farm in Samford Valley. What venues have great waste less initiatives in your area? Let’s celebrate them!

Have you ever been confused about which bin liners are the most sustainable choice? The team at @karmacollabhub asked us for guidance on this topic recently. Here’s what we know. When it comes to sustainable procurement of consumable items like bin liners, there are multiple factors that influence what the best choice is depending on the organisations procurement systems, budget and recycling and waste processes. So we came up with four golden rules that will support any waste conscious organisations to make an informed bin liner selection! Waste Less Golden Rules for bin liner selection 1. Look for liners made from renewable starch (plant based) or recycled polymer (recycled plastic). 2. Prioritise certified compostable liners if you will be composting them OR recyclable liners if you will be soft plastics recycling them. 3. Support locally manufactured products. 4. Look for a colour that matches your waste stream bin colour to avoid confusion. Otherwise go with clear, white or light grey. @Cardiabioproducts and @biobag_au both have some great product options. If you're about to go compostable with your bin liners, check out Grace's blog to ensure it’s certified compostable and refer to Golden Rule #2. If you want help understanding which 'eco' products are going to get you best sustainability value, get in touch. We would love to hear from you! #sustainableprocurement #wasteless #recyclable #reducereuse
This year we're going with a MORE & LESS approach! It's a simple alternative to goal setting that we like because, honestly, who knows what 2021 will bring. Here’s Grace’s favourite Waste Less goal…. I’ll have MORE confidence about recycling and LESS waste in my landfill bin! The Logan RecyclingMarket just reopened - one of our favourites. If you're in Brisbane and love second hand shopping this one is a must visit! There's few things more satisfying than finding just what you need in a secondhand, buyback or tip shop. Giving item a second life is extra cool when you pay a fraction of the price that it would be new! Did you know that at Resource Hub we work with tip shops, resale markets and buyback stores? We support these #circulareconomy focused organisations improve community engagement and maximise profit with the right businesses processes. Contact us to find out more about our TipShop services.
Check out this amazing Knot Wrap concept from @Lush Cosmetics! This, along with a lovely gift of some beauty products reminded our director Lacey of a box of similar products that she’s been accumulating in her closet and provided inspiration for our 2020 staff gifts. Each team member received a selection of 'good as new' beauty products wrapped in either a new scarf made from recycled content or a previously loved vintage scarf. Did you receive any gifts that you might not use and will probably still be patiently waiting in the cupboard come Christmas 2021? Perhaps you could set up a 'regiftables' box, drawer or cupboard so that you're ready to waste less next gifting season! Did you practice any regifting this year? #sustainablegift #wasteless #resourcehub #wasteconscious #circulareconomy #bethechange #lushcosmeticsaustralia #ecogifts #regift
In December, @World's Biggest Garage Sale was promoting their #OneSecond challenge, and so we decided to give it a crack. Our director Lacey got busy regifting and second hand shopping (for gifts and wrapping) and our Waste Less champion Grace got her sewing machine out to make new things out of old things! Check out these handmade reusable cutlery set gifts made from an unneeded duvet cover, recovered velcro, excess cutlery and a straw. Our Director Lacey Webb was excited to chat with Katie Norman, CEO of @sustainableschoolsnetwork last week, to get a better understanding of where they are going over the coming year and how Resource Hub can be involved in supporting their awesome goals. The highlight of the chat was the conclusion where Katie advised that the call wasn't what she expected! There are some incredible teams who deliver stellar education programs with and for SSN and we see that they are already well serviced in that area! However we definitely see the value that we can provide by helping this incredible waste conscious organisation add governance, process and commercial measurements of success into their everyday. We're so excited to start working with SSN in the new year and helping them to strengthen their business processes and build scalable outcomes for their continued success. Plus Jess is excited to give them a hand with their bookeeping in the short term! Do you know of other waste conscious organisations who need a hand with process? We recorded a podcast! We joined two passionate changemakers, Ash Stallard of @shift_style and Carlos @machadosoy Sustainability Coordinator at Western Health on @plasticfreegoldcoast’s brilliant Wavemakers podcast. Stay tuned for the episode landing in early 2021! Thanks to @karmacollabhub for making this podcast possible with such a great podcast recording space.
It’s the end of another year and what a year it has been! We navigated the challenges of being a young business through Covid and have now arrived at the end of the year with so much to celebrate. Being nominated as a Micro Business finalist in Brisbane's Lord Mayors Business Awards was pretty special for us . We uncovered so many lessons through our 2020 National Recycling Week behaviour change experiment! Check out our blog to read about our all of our discoveries. https://www.resourcehub.com.au/post/national-recycling-week-2020-that-s-a-wrap Our six top behaviour change tips: 1. Get clear on your behaviours 2. Establish measures of success and data collection methodologies 3. Choose your content wisely 5. Consider utilising competitions and free giveaways 6. Track engagement during the program and adjust We saw firsthand the value of being very clear about WHAT behaviours we were trying to create, WHO needed to do them and WHERE they would be performed. This made it straightforward for us to design a clear and concise program and measure it's outcomes. #NationalRecyclingWeek gave us an excuse to run an experiment in behaviour change and test out some of our theories about who would engage with a recycling focused social media campaign, what our audience know and don’t know about recycling, perceptions towards recycling as well as what people actually do with their #waste and #recycling in their homes. Check out our blog to discover our top five discoveries. Here’s a sneak peak… 1. Both qualitative and quantitative data were valuable 2. Recycling is confusing even to #wasteconscious people 3. People still don’t fully understand the #ARL 4. The ARL is very helpful for clearing recycling confusion, but isn’t a perfect tool We learnt so much through this experiment both about our particular audience, their waste behaviours, knowledge and interests, and the value of collecting data to assess the impact of our campaign. Social and behavioural research can he complex but we’ve got ways to keep it simple and give you helpful data to make better decisions and increase the likelihood people behaving in the way that you need them to. Our experience in the waste and resource recovery space, has shown us that there are two types of waste conscious organisations: 1. Green on the inside - Your business already has waste conscious practices embedded in your daily operation, and you need support to share this message both inside the business and with your customers and stakeholders so that they can really get behind and be inspired by your business and Waste Less mission. 2. Green on the outside - Your business looks green on the outside with great eco marketing messaging, but when looking at your business practices, there are definitely opportunities for improvement to make waste minimisation a core part of your business-as-usual. Do you relate to either of these types of waste conscious businesses? We're here to give you a hand whether you're green on the inside OR on the outside, and will help you be green all the way through! Our Waste Less team is currently busy putting together a thorough case study report revealing the results from our #NationalRecyclingWeek behaviour change experiment which we will be releasing next week. But as the data nerds we are, we wanted to share an interesting finding we've made whilst analysing the data captured so far. The results from our National Recycling Week follow-up survey show that just 50% of responders could accurately identify which of the recycling logos in this image are the Australasian Recycling Label (ARL). This tells us that recycling labelling can be confusing, even to people that know and care about it! Keep your eyes peeled for full results next week! #behaviourchange #recycling #recyclinglabel #ARL #wasteless #resourcehub #recyclingconfusion #recyclingbin #experiment #recyclingpractices #nrw #nrw2020 #nationalrecyclingweek2020 #sustainability #sustainablebusiness #sustainablebrand #wastelessconsulting #wasteconsulting #wasteconsultant #recyclingsupport #australasianrecyclinglabel #planetark #apco
The changing nature of COVID-19 has meant that with the reopening of #airport lounges, the service model has changed to one with an increased focus on pre-preparation, including in some instances more pre-packaged foods. So as any traveler does, our Director and Founder Lacey took it upon herself to discuss the change to #recyclingpractices! While the volume of soft plastic has notably increased, no change to separation has happened as yet. And it's early days, so we're sure there will be an opportunity for change soon... but in the meantime, the question is how the sustainability/waste/enviro teams at the #airlines are planning to tackle and measure the changes to their #wastestreams. A simple change to the cleaners' carts for separation would go a long way, and perhaps adding #softplastics balers into their processes. Have you noticed an increase in your business's waste, to accommodate changes implemented due to #COVID19? #recyclingsolutions #plasticrecycling #sustainability #sustainablepractices #sustainablebrand #sustainablebusiness #businesspractices #recycling #resourcehub #softplasticrecycling #wasteless #wastelesssolutions #resourcerecovery #wastemanagement #wasteindustry
We are so excited to be finalists in the Lord Mayor's Business Awards 2020 and while we didn’t take home the shiny trophy last night, we want to issue a big #ResourceHub congratulations to Catherine Ball and Alistair Graham and @worldofdronescongress, as well as a huge thank you to @brisbane.lordmayor Adrian Schrinner, and Brisbane Economic Development Agency for the opportunity the be involved in such an auspicious event and for the wonderful validation of the hard work we have put in. Congratulations also to the other winners across the evening – especially Ashleigh Morris at Coreo and Enviro Sand who we are excited to continue watching as their businesses soar! Resource Hub is a labour of love for our small team. We started as a one woman band, and quickly expanded to a team of 4 strong and experienced women, supporting the #wastemanagement and #resourcerecovery sectors with an offering that was underserved. As of this week we have branched out and have more collaborators along for the journey – supporting our clients across a range of industries: council waste operations, not-for-profit, and even in global #retail! We love the opportunity of helping our clients navigate the complexities of maximising great #people and #process within our sector, and helping them solve the problems of waste.
Great to see our whole team on the cover of F-Magazine's article about the Lord Mayor’s Business Award 2020. We feel so humble to be a finalist amongst such great brands and female leaders, such as Ashleigh Morris who founded industry leader Coreo and Carly Brown from @une_piece. Link to article in bio. We had a query from one of our Waste Less followers last week and were happy to help with some guidance. He was concerned as their office was cleaning out the old paper archives, and had identified over 150 cardboard ring binders to be "thrown away". So we helped with a few alternatives, and thought it would be handy to share with our followers as well, if anyone should stumble across a similar challenge. 1. Depending on your region, it's possible that if the cardboard and the metal rings are separated, that these can go in your yellow bin. A little bit of effort, and recycling sorted. 2. Check out schools and groups who may want good condition second hand folders. We're always happy to give a shout out or help with introductions! 3. Check out the Terracycle binder boxes. For a large volume they can be pricey, but they give you the confidence to know that all of the parts will be recycled with little effort on your part. 4. Check out secure destruction companies. Some of them will not only shred the paper but will also shed up the folders for you and deal with the metal at the end! National Recycling Week has come to an end and we are now busy reviewing the valuable data we’ve gathered for this experiment from social media, e-newsletters, surveys and actual recycling and rubbish! One aspect of the experiment that we haven’t announced yet is that we also had two Brisbane based households who volunteered to be our guinea pigs throughout the week! We wanted get some immediate insight into how the #NationalRecyclingWeek campaign changed waste behaviours, and so we went through the two families household trash! We will be assessing whether there was a shift in their bin behaviours at home resulting from following our social media posts and checking the #AustralasianRecyclingLabel. We needed baseline data to know how they normally separate their recycling and waste before National Recycling Week, so Grace got her PPE on and went through their garbage. We’ll be letting you in on the findings of our experiment next week once we’ve gone through all our data. Keep an eye out for our upcoming posts to find out how (and IF!) our campaign changed our two awesome guinea pig families waste separation in only one week.

Recycling can be tricky, that’s why the Australasian Recycling Label is here to help! The conditionally recyclable label gives you specific instruction that you must follow to recycle the item. Common conditionally recyclable instructions you’ll see are: • Return to store / store drop off (applies to soft plastics). Drop this into any RedCycle soft plastics recycling collection bin at your local Woolworths and Coles • Make or scrunch into ball (applies to foil) and place in your normal recycling bin. • Leave attached (applies to lids and caps) and place in your normal recycling bin. • Flatten or fold to recycle (applies to cardboard) and place in your normal recycling bin. Check out the ARL website to discover more about each instruction, or tune in this afternoon as Grace talks you through some of the conditionally recyclable instructions in her next video. www.arl.org.au
Today, Grace talks you through the Australasian Recycling Labels (ARL) on a container of Sweet Potato Dip (yum!). Did you know that reattaching the lid before recycling can save this small packaging component from falling through the sorting process and ending up in landfill? This is one of the things that Grace will explore with you today! Got a question? We’re here to help you with your recycling questions all week and would love to hear from you. Post a question in the comments below and we’ll answer it in our Facebook LIVE on Saturday at 11am! Happy National Recycling Week!
