A pair of razorbills (Alca torda) at Látrabjarg, July 2021. Razorbills are largely sea faring birds who only come to land to breed in large cliff colonies like Látrabjarg. They mate for life.

Sea thrift (Armeria maritima) flowering I'm Vatnsnes, beginning of July. This beautiful pink plant grows wild in sand and marshy areas close to the shore in the Northern Hemisphere, but it is also popular as a garden plant all around the globe.
The sea thrift used to be featured on a small British coin, which is where the term "thrifty" comes from: it was thrifty to buy something with this coin that wasn't worth much!

Meadow pipit in Illugastaðir staring at me with an insect in its mouth, beginning of July. The overall world population has declined in the last two decades as it relies on bogs, moorland and low-intensity agriculture habitats which are disappearing quickly, especially in some countries such as France.

Arctic tern (Sterna paradisaea) flying over the water on the Vatnsnes peninsula, looking for small fish like herring or sand eel in the water. With a maximum weight of 127g, arctic terns are still able to migrate about 35500 kilometers from their wintering grounds to Iceland.

Three common redshanks (Tringa totanus) perched on a fence, near Illugastaðir on Vatnsnes, northwestern Iceland. It is very common for redshanks and snipes to perch like this on the side of the road, which is the easiest way to observe them.

Flowers and feathery fruits of the mountain avens (Dryas octopetala), the national flower of Iceland. The Icelandic name of the flower, Vetrarblóm meaning winter flower, refers to the fact that it is often the first one to be seen on the mountains in spring. Its leaves, which are edible and can be made into herbal tea, are the favorite food of the rock Ptarmigan.

Fluffy eider ducklings (Somateria mollissima) yesterday on the beach in Hvammstangi. Their camouflage makes them hard to see on the rocks and in seaweed, but these little feathery puffs still are preyed upon by some fish (like cod), seagulls, skua, foxes, and minks. It is common for them to lose their mother, but other female eiders also often pick up these strays.

A pair of great northern divers (Gavia immer) last week in Hólmavík. Great northern divers, also called common loons in North America, are large and striking birds with their black, grey and white patterns. Up-close, their red eyes can also be seen.

A pair of dunlins (Calidris alpina) near Hólmavík last Thursday. Adult breeding dunlins are very easy to recognize with their black belly.
The Icelandic name of the dunlin is Lóuþræll, meaning "the golden plover's slave". This comes from the observation that the dunlin often seems to follow the golden plover around.
