Studies, job and life together: Forest officer couple to guard forest

To save the forest, they walk hand in hand. Jackson and Riya started their journey together for studies and it continues even in their career and life too. Both work as forest guards in Konnakkuzhi forest station.

They met each other during their coaching for government jobs. Within two months after marriage, both got appointments in the same forest station at Konnakkuzhi. Now it has been one and half years since they began to work together.

The couple have come across several thrilling and dangerous situations together during their duty. Many times they encountered wild animals from the forest. Once an elephant tried to attack while chasing an elephant herd.

It was after having MBA and a work experience of one year, Riya attended PSC exams. She is also included in the list of Company Board Assistant, Excise and Education Departments.

P J Joseph-Dr Santha recollect their love story on golden wedding anniversary

Kerala Congress leader and former minister P J Joseph and wife Dr Santha are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on September 15. The love story that bloomed during a mango season later culminated in marriage.

The duo had fallen in love in 1967 when PJ Joseph was an MA student in Thevara SH College and Dr Santha a doctor at Purappuzha primary health centre. She used to stay at Joseph’s house as she was the college junior of his elder sister. He first met her near the mango tree in his house.

Joseph used to sing songs at nights. Once when he sang the song ‘Jalte He Jiske Liye’, he noticed someone listening to it secretly. ‘Santha was pretending of not listening while actually she was enjoying the song,’ Joseph said.

Later, she was transferred. They met again at Muvattupuzha government hospital when Joseph brought an employee of his farm for treatment. Thus, their relationship took a new turn. Following this, Joseph and Santha started exchanging letters.

They tied the knot on September 15, 1971. By the time, Joseph was elected as MLA. Joseph always says that Dr Santha was his pillar of support ever since. Dr Santha retired as the additional director of health department. The couple has four children – Apu, Yamuna, Antony and late Joe.

CUSAT Scientist develops machine to measure happiness

Though we cannot fully express the emotions like happiness, now it can be measured using a device. Dr Shalini Menon, researcher of Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), developed the machine to measure happiness.

Chemicals like Dopamine produced by the nerve cells determine the human emotions like happiness. Dr Shalini Menon invented a device called Dopameter to measure the quantity of Dopamine. This will help neurological treatment, Dr Shalini said.

The small device costs only Rs 4000 and it requires only one drop of blood sample. It gives the result within 2 seconds. The disposable electrode of the device can be programmed and can be used to diagnose different health conditions. Shalini has applied for patent of Dopameter.

Dr Shalini Menon developed the prototype of Dopameter sensor under the guidance of Dr K Gireesh Kumar, the dean of Science faculty in CUSAT. The Prochip Technology in Kozhikode also cooperated with the research.

Dr Shalini Menon is a CISR research associate of the Sensor Research Group in the Department of Applied Chemistry. She is also the founder of Kem Sensor, a government-approved startup.
