I'm featuring only LGBTQ2+ or Indigenous authors /topics this month for Pride & Indigenous awareness. I really want to read this book..
From chapters.ca
"In a series of personal essays, prominent journalist and LGBTQIA+ activist George M. Johnson explores his childhood, adolescence, and college years in New Jersey and Virginia. From the memories of getting his teeth kicked out by bullies at age five, to flea marketing with his loving grandmother, to his first sexual relationships, this young-adult memoir weaves together the trials and triumphs faced by Black queer boys.

Both a primer for teens eager to be allies as well as a reassuring testimony for young queer men of color, All Boys Aren''t Blue covers topics such as gender identity, toxic masculinity, brotherhood, family, structural marginalization, consent, and Black joy. Johnson''s emotionally frank style of writing will appeal directly to young adults."

These socks were giving me beetlejuice vibes and then the green book.
Beetlejuice always on my mind.

This is my next read. Samantha Irby is someone I recently stumbled upon and love. Everything she says I am in agreement with 4000%. One of my favorite quotes from one of her books is :
"My alarm goes off at 5:50 a.m. First thing I do is check to make sure I'm not dead. If I am, in fact, still alive, I usually sob uncontrollably until there's nothing left in my tear ducts but salt dust, then grope blindly through my apartment to the bathroom, where I say a little prayer for a hole to open beneath my building and swallow us all. "

This is exactly how I feel. Every morning. I wondered if I have some fucked up SI or depression, turns out it's normal! 😀 some of us just really wish we were dead in the mornings.

My current read- Kicking off Pride and Indigenous awareness month with this book.

From Google reads ...“You’re gonna need a rock and a whole lotta medicine” is a mantra that Jonny Appleseed, a young Two-Spirit/Indigiqueer, repeats to himself in this vivid and utterly compelling novel.

Off the reserve and trying to find ways to live and love in the big city, Jonny becomes a cybersex worker who fetishizes himself in order to make a living. No matter where he is, he does not quite fit in. On the res, he is teased and harassed for being queer. In Winnipeg his is teased and harassed for being native. Self-ordained as an NDN glitter princess, Jonny has one week before he must return to the “rez,” and his former life, to attend the funeral of his stepfather. The next seven days are like a fevered dream: stories of love, trauma, sex, kinship, ambition, and the heartbreaking recollection of his beloved kokum (grandmother). Jonny’s life is a series of breakages, appendages, and linkages—and as he goes through the motions of preparing to return home, he learns how to put together the pieces of his life.
Jonny Appleseed is a unique, shattering vision of First Nations life, full of grit, glitter, and dreams."...

Wow, this is one of the best memoirs I have read. It's brutally honest, heartbreaking, funny and fascinating.

Wow
Bookstagram is a community I am proud to be a part of!

The Amazing @teatime_with_a_book @etown_bookworm @arianna.reads @bookishcanadiangirl @allthereads_neverthetime are donating to the Legacy of Hope for every #everychildmattersstack ( orange book stack or black and white as orange books are rare ish) posted up to $100. You are beautiful people for using your platforms to make a difference.

In case you missed it.. this is all in due to the undocumented mass grave of indigenous children's bodies found under a residential school over the weekend which has sent our country into a tailspin of grief .
It's true, most Canadians were not taught about this, not in school and never in the media. I learned about it from a family friend who was a survivor, but still am learning more and more horrific details every day.
I beg you to educate yourself on these schools yourself. Take the inneciative to learn about our dirty, filthy past of trying to "kill the Indian inside the child ". Respect and acknowledge what these people, their families went through and how they are constantly treated every day. There are many reservations that don't have clean water access, hundreds of missing and murdered indigenous women who have barely had any news coverage or police time. I could go on and on.. but I an no expert, I am a white person with all the advantages who is on stolen land, talking shit I really don't have the slightest idea what its really like. Its best if I can get anyone reading this to please go to reputable websites and just educate yourself.

First of all - here is my orange candle which will burn for the 215 murdered indigenous children found underneath a residential school over the weekend. Will that fix it? No. But I want to bring awareness as much as I can to all my #bookstagram friends across the world.

Now this is my wrapup. Although it looks like I read a bunch and had a great month, I didn't.
Blue ticket was an absolute bust, bad feminist was not awful but was just generic memoir type stories. The gift of fear was really great and in this day and age I recommend everyone read it. Rising above a toxic workplace and Toxic workplace although insightful and helpful- didn't really give me the answer I was looking for, but I don't think anything will. The Bees was a book I was looking forward to and it was boring and weird.. trying to hard to be dystopian or humanize the bees- DNF. Kathy Reichs is my go to for break-up a bad spell and she did not revive my pile as Fatal Voyage is not one of her best books. Funny you don't look autistic by Michael McCreary (who is a comedian ) really gave me new insight into Autism and people on the spectrum, but it was not funny. Lastly, Lisey's story by Stephen King- I'm 55% done and so far its a really messed up love story? Not my cup of tea... at all.

How can I not address the 215 remains of Indigenous children found UNDERNEATH a residential school? How can I not address the fact some indigenous GIRLS as young as 10 in foster care are being forced to get IUDs inserted in them by their social workers to prevent pregnancy from how high risk rape is by their foster parents ? How can I not address the racism and discrimination that indigenous people have faced for centuries here in my wonderful home country? We are so nice and welcoming in Canada and have no dirty, skeletons in our closets towards are own people who's land we stole ? No, no no.
I am so disgusted right now.

I'm not as vocal about my disease as some people, mostly because I don't want to give it anymore power over me than it already does, just learn to exist with it kind of thing. But, May is Lupus awareness month and I know a bunch of autoimmune disease /chronic conditions have been highlighted this month ( this book is about a journalist with Crohns ) SOo, I will let you have your spotlight Lupus.

The very shortened version is I was diagnosed at age 19. My initial complaints were rashes - queen of rashes, hairloss, extremely fatigued, achy and joint pain. After my thyroid tests came back ok I was told I'm " fat and lazy" by the doctor who retracted her comments after my ANA / ENA Came back off the charts. Since my diagnoses my secondary conditions to lupus are : Sjogrens disease, lichen planus, COPD, neuropathy, kidney disease CKD1, arthritis, pluritis, myocarditis & multiple tooth decay and loss.

The hardest part of it all though is lack of respect from people when they are told /aware you have it. Maybe from lack of knowledge or ignorance but it's hurtful all the same. Being told you " don't look sick, maybe it's all in your head" or " maybe if you looked after your body better and ate X or tried X you'd get better" is going back to it essentially being an obesity thing and not your body attacking itself. When asked "what does it feel like?" I say "take a really bad flu where you feel like garbage, everything hurts, you struggle to breath and it takes all you energy to do a simple thing like have a shower. Plus, have sores on your face/mouth and your feet feel like they've been dipped in acid and whatever symptoms might be specific to you- that's how it feels on bad days".
And covid? Well Lupus is certainly on the ' underlying conditions' list that can cause severe illness or death with covid. So when people blast on about concerts or gatherings being canceled I can't help but be selfish and think "we'll I also don't want to be hospitalized or die. ". I've also been told I should be dead- nature has intended for me to die, survival of the fittest shit .. so I don't know if there is any reasoning with them in the end 🤷‍♀️.

I picked this up at a thriftstore months ago and have completely forgotten about it. I may need to read it sooner than later... sounds amazing .
..."Armageddon only happens once, you know. They don’t let you go around again until you get it right.’
People have been predicting the end of the world almost from its very beginning, so it’s only natural to be sceptical when a new date is set for Judgement Day. But what if, for once, the predictions are right, and the apocalypse really is due to arrive next Saturday, just after tea?
You could spend the time left drowning your sorrows, giving away all your possessions in preparation for the rapture, or laughing it off as (hopefully) just another hoax. Or you could just try to do something about it.
It’s a predicament that Aziraphale, a somewhat fussy angel, and Crowley, a fast-living demon now finds themselves in. They’ve been living amongst Earth’s mortals since The Beginning and, truth be told, have grown rather fond of the lifestyle and, in all honesty, are not actually looking forward to the coming Apocalypse.
And then there’s the small matter that someone appears to have misplaced the Antichrist…"...
