Sunny days in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado.

This is Lower Blue Lake in the Mount Sneffels Wilderness near Telluride, Ridgway, and Ouray. Lower Blue Lake sits at the foot of Mount Sneffels, one of Colorado's most popular fourteeners (mountains higher than 14,000 ft (4,267 m)), and it is one of three lakes that together make up the Blue Lakes. The lakes are named for their brilliant blue color which is due to the presence of rock flour (powdered rock particles) suspended in the water. The rock flour shifts the spectrum of the reflected light, creating their vivid color.

The Blue Lakes and Mount Sneffels are in the Uncompahgre National Forest which is managed by the USDA Forest Service. It is one of the most accessible wilderness areas in the state, with a number of activities permitted here (with proper license). It's no surprise that this is a popular hike. In fact, the Forest Service recommends that visitors avoid the area on weekends and holidays to escape crowds.

To ensure this area remains open to all, be sure to review the Mount Sneffels Wilderness regulations prior to visiting. The regulations are readily available on the USDA Forest Service website, but note that these are in addition to any general Wilderness restrictions.

Access to wild spaces is a privilege, and we should treat it as such.
