HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED👇🏼 - I was peacefully sitting at a park bench when a man I had encountered in the past, approached. He belonged to a spiritual foundation and was on his duty of recruiting youth. Since I had consistently excused my way out of his request to visit this spiritual centre, he turned peevish. In the argument that followed, there were multiple regressive thoughts he brought to the table but these were the major three - 1. He told me to not speak in English because the English Language is not Indian Culture. 2. He claimed that British has ruined India and our ways of life. 3. He believed that the West has imposed homosexuality and Indian parents should take action against their child if he/she is a homosexual. Midst these clashing thoughts, I realised that even though some people are literate, they are not educated. Like this man, they can be jingoistic, non-progressive and non-empathetic in their approach to life and others. I put the following counter-arguments that shut him up - 1. If a person is using a specific language to communicate, it is a matter of his/her personal choice and does not necessarily imply an absence of patriotism or love for their culture. 2. If a person is following a particular lifestyle, it is again a matter of his/her personal choice and does not suggest anti-nationalism or anti-culture. 3. And finally, if a person is a homosexual (part of the LGBT+ Community), it is not a matter of choice but a matter of being, a matter of self expression. It is their right to be themselves and share their lives with whoever they please! After giving up and departing, this man, who was dressed in a t-shirt and joggers (Western Inventions) remarked at me “You are coloured in the Western culture”. I waved at him with a “Okay. Bye bye.” and wondered to myself - a progressive thinking is now equivalent to the 'Western Culture’ for some people. This is something for all of us to think about. #LiterateButNotEducated #SocialPsychology
