Zamfara state has recorded several attacks from bandits. Recall that after the Kankara school boys were abducted, they were moved to Zamfara state where the negotiation for their release took place before they were returned to Katsina state. Speaking during the meeting, top armed commanders of the bandit groups, Kachalla Turji of Shinkafi and Kachalla Muhammadu Bello, lamented that security personnel had killed many of their family members, with many of them losing virtually all their possessions through cattle rustling, extortion by security agents and military bombardments. The commandants say thousands of their youths do not have anything to do and that since they have no means of livelihood, they decided to go into crime. The bandits accused the government of not being sincere in ending instances of banditry and kidnappings. Responding, the cleric asked them to cease all hostilities and allow him reach out to President Buhari to see how their legitimate grievances could be addressed immediately. He told them that they should not expect magic from him as his success would depend on the cooperation. He presented them with Islamic books, including copies of the Qur’an and wrappers.

Former running mate to President Buhari, Pastor Tunde Bakare, says Nigerians might have been shortchanged after they rejected the PDP in 2015 and accepted the promise of change the APC came into power with. ''The truth of the matter is it is still the same Buhari, in the midst of many competing interests, we respond differently. The President is still himself, some have even asked me if he is not somebody else. Power changes people, has power changed him or is he making the best situation of the circumstances? He will be the one to answer it The expectations of Nigerians, including everyone who woke up to say we need a breath of fresh air, has not been met. There is a feeling of disappointment. Citizens have right to demand for good governance. People deserve the government they get. We rejected PDP and embraced APC’s change but it appears we have been shortchanged.”he said
The Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 has said it will shut down schools across the country if it continues to notice a spike in the number of confirmed cases. PTF National Incident Manager, Mukhtar Muhammed, stated this in a recent interview with NTA. In his words, “The issue of school reopening is something that the PTF has discussed very extensively. The ministry of education decided to open the schools. Based on our own understanding, it was the states that actually wanted to have the schools reopened. The suggestion for married underage girls to have voting rights has been rejected by the senate committee on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Kabiru Gaya, chairman of the senate committee revealed this while answering questions at the NAN Forum in Abuja on Tuesday February 2. Gaya said “One of the people who came to the public hearing submitted the memorandum, and argued that the word underage was not his, but that any woman or man that is married should be considered as an adult. “That was his reason. Our own resolve is that if a woman is at the age of 16 and she gets married, she should not be allowed to vote. “Generally there was a lot of noise about. It was in a memorandum submitted by a group of people and they have their rights as Nigerians. “But when we came to the committee, we discussed a lot on that and at the end of the day, we felt we could not go along with that suggestion and it was dropped.” Also commenting on the suggestion for elections not to hold on Saturdays, Gaya averred that same argument will be made if elections are moved to Fridays and Sundays. He added “If we move elections to Fridays some people will say it is their worship day; if we move it to Sundays, some other people will say it is also their worship day. So, that suggestion was also thrown out."

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has said that the recent attacks on law-abiding Fulanis in the southern part of the country needs to stop as it will be setting the whole country on a dangerous path. Recall that there have been calls for the Fulani herdsmen in some South Western and South Eastern states to vacate the area over claims that they have continuously masterminded crimes in the region. Yoruba activist, Sunday Igboho, recently issued an ultimatum to Fulani herders in Ibarapa local government area of Oyo state. On Monday, February 1, he visited Ogun state where he also vowed to ''flush out'' killer herdsmen. Reacting to the development, the northern elders called on President Buhari and other security agencies to wade into the matter and stop the trend. A statement released by the NEF director of publicity and advocacy, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, reads in part “The forum has been receiving reports of attacks on Fulani communities in the south, since the night of Sunday, January 31, and had taken the responsible step by drawing the attention of authorities to the dangers which these attacks represent for all Nigerians. NEF is deeply worried by reports of ejections and attacks on Fulani herders and communities in some states of the South. Law-abiding Fulani communities are advised to seek protection where it is available, and urged to resist the temptation to take the law into their own hands. The vast majority of Fulani are law-abiding and have rights to live lawfully wherever they can find means of subsistence. Like all Nigerians who can be found in every inch of Nigeria, the rights of the Fulani will not be abridged by criminals hiding behind ethnic interests to exterminate them. There are criminals in all ethnic groups, and the nation will be treading dangerous grounds if it continues to tolerate the demonization of entire groups over particular types of crimes. The forum demands the immediate arrest and prosecution of persons who are attacking Fulani and setting the country on a very dangerous path. #EyesofAfrikaTV
The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association (MACBAN) has asked the Federal Government to introduce a social support programme to alleviate the huge losses of livestock for herdsmen across the country. In a communique jointly signed by the association’s President, Muhammad Kiruwa and National Secretary, Baba Othman Ngelzarma and released after a one-day national executive meeting of MACBAN with the Chairman of its Board of Trustees (BoT), the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, Miyetti Allah said over five million cattle have been lost to banditry, cattle rustling, kidnapping and climate change, which adversely affect the herdsmen, hence the need for a form of palliative to ameliorate their plights. The group which called for an immediate action to be taken against local criminal gangs known as “Yansakai” in Kebbi and Niger states who are reportedly involved in the wanton killings of 153 innocent pastoralists from March 2020 to January 2021 and about 30 people killed in Bangin, also condemned the rustling of 1,730 cows in Kafin Koro in Mariga local Government in Niger State last week rendering several families destitute. The statement read “It also calls on the Federal Government to introduce social support programmes to alleviate the huge losses of livestock; over five million cattle have been lost as a result of banditry, cattle rustling, kidnapping and climate change. “The meeting calls on the Federal Government to carry out sensitization and re-orientation programmes for pastoralists and revamp the nomadic education programme for their children. It also calls on the Federal Government to deal decisively with our porous borders that makes it possible for the massive proliferation of arms and impose the implementation of ECOWAS transhumance certificate protocol to check influx of herdsmen from neighbouring countries"
