Today marks the one year anniversary of me starting the 8 Bit Monday page! One year ago today I posted a copy of “The Legend of Zelda” as my first official post. I did this as a way to just relieve some stress during Covid, never thinking it would turn into what it is. Thanks to each and everyone of you out there who follow and support the page. You all help make things fun. 🕹

Who’s up for another Top 10 list? This time around I thought it would be fun to rank the arcade machines over the years that I pumped enough quarters into to feed a family of five for life. These are the games that I personally have a deep love for and consider some of the best ever, but also ones that I know may not be on your list. These are my Top 10 favorite arcade games.

Well here we are. We’ve come to the end of the road. It’s time we crown the king, or queen in this case. My all time favorite arcade game is the certified classic, Mrs. Pac-Man... the highly anticipated sequel to the legendary Pac-Man arcade godfather.

I know this pick may come as a surprise. I also know that this is probably not your all time favorite arcade game, but I also know that it is for me! Mrs. Pac-Man will always be the absolute GOAT in my eyes and that will never change.

The replay value on such a simple game is immeasurable. I never get tired of playing this game. My all time favorite way to play is the high speed version. The original slower version is fine, but the modified cabinets are the way to go.

I have so many crazy memories and stories involving Mrs. Pac-Man but I’ll share my favorite! Full disclosure: this is MY game. I have mastered it, studied it, engrossed myself into it at a very young age. I will beat anyone who is willing to challenge me. Trust me, you will lose. Anyway, back to the story.

I was at the local Pizza-Inn one night with my mom and step dad. I was playing the Mrs. Pac-Man sit down table top machine they had. I was probably 7 or 8? I was crushing it to where some kids started crowding around and watching me. When I ran out of lives, they would go get quarters from their parents and ask me to play again! 😂 (TRUE STORY)

We’re coming to the end of another fun list. There’s only two spots left and trust me, they are complete stark opposites in the arcade world but both cemented icons in video game history. Well, here we go...

Coming in at the second spot is none other than the midway monster, Mortal Kombat. The one, the only, the OG. This game needs no introduction. We lived for this game when it was unleashed on us arcade goers. We were hooked. It was the urban legend turned true. A parents worst nightmare. We just couldn’t stop playing this horrifying violent video game.

See kids, you wouldn’t have all your blood and guts and gore in your cute little video games without this legend right here. It paved the way so you were accepted. It weathered the Washington political shit storm just so you could be spawned.

Remember learning fatalities for the first time? Talking with your friends about it at school. Making lists of all the moves and passing them around. (Yeah kids, we had magazines, that was it...the internet was barely alive)

I used to dominate my local arcades on this machine. I could beat the entire game usually on one credit. It didn’t matter who slid their two quarters on the counter next, they were getting their spine ripped out by Sub-Zero. Before online gaming and twitch gave us audiences, voices and rankings, this was how you earned your bragging rights.

Well here we are, the top 3! Coming in at the 3rd spot is one of the true GOATS. One of the most ground breaking and influential games of all time. The one that had us 80s kid flipping our shit! The original four player TMNT Arcade Game from Konami! 🔥

I struggled with putting this game at three, but that’s the challenge of a top ten list! Everyone knows the impact this game had on arcade goers is beyond measurable and due from not only how phenomenal it was (and still is) but how genre re-defining the game play and graphics were. This game was truly ahead of its time.

Upon your character selection, you’re immediately transported into the world of the original cartoon series where you get to rescue April from the grips of Shredder, Krang and all our favorite goons. The graphics were on point, the sound design and music solid and the game play was epic.

Teaming up with your buddies to play through this at your local arcade while guzzling Pepsi and slamming pizza and nachos was the quintessential way to spend your weekends in the late 80s and early 90s. For me, it didn’t get any better.

I will never forget the first time I saw this game. My brain couldn’t fathom what was sitting before me and I couldn’t shove my quarters in quick enough. I absolutely LOVED everything about this game and I always will. This particular game is a part of my gamer DNA.

Coming in at the 4th spot is one of my all time favorite games for not only quality and history, but also sentimental value. Q*bert is in my opinion one of the best and most important video games that’s ever existed, and to me is just as important as Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Frogger and others.

Growing up I spent many, many hours in the arcade, usually with my grandmother by my side. Some of the games she enjoyed to watch me play were Kangaroo, Zaxxon, Paper Boy, Burger Time, Dig Dug... but most of all, she loved Q*bert! She would just let me pump quarter after quarter into this machine and would never tire of watching. As long as I was having fun, she was having fun.

Most of my favorite important memories of my childhood involve me being around my grandmother, but a lot of those also include the arcades in the 80s and playing video games on the early consoles. But the two games that remind me of her the most are The Legend of Zelda and Q*bert. We spent so many hours together between these two games and I’ll always cherish the time.

Coming in at the 5th spot is one of the most popular and important arcade games of all time, the one that rewrote the history of fighting games, the one that had EVERYONE playing all over the world, the Capcom 🐐... Streetfighter 2.”

The amount of quarters I pumped into this machine is ridiculous. This was one of those games that it took a while to get the moves down, as well as figure out who your favorite character would be. But once you had it down, there was only one way to join as the next challenger. You had to do “The 50 Cent Slide.”

What’s the “50 cent slide” you ask?? That’s when you slowly walk up to the game and slide your two quarters up onto the machine signaling to your opponent that his time is on notice. With a slight glance and nod letting them know that “you’ve got next.”

For me, I’ll let you choose my fighter, I’ll still handle my business. But as who were my favorites, I always went with Ken, Chun-Li and Guile the most. But like I said, pick my fighter, you’re taking the L. Who was your go to challenger?

Coming in at the 6th spot, it’s the epic 6 player Konami beat em up “X-Men” Let’s talk about this game for a second. Six players! That’s right... six!! Freaking 6 player beat em up madness!! We had NEVER seen anything like it and it dominated the arcades, literally!

This thing was massive with two screens! One of my local arcades (RIP Tilt) had one of the 6 player cabinets and my friends and I gave it hell every Friday and Saturday night. There wasn’t anything like it and we couldn’t get enough.

You could grab five buddies and take on the villainous mastermind Magneto or you could team up with a few strangers and become best friends by the end. Or, if you like to torture yourself you could try to tackle this game on your own, but you better have two pockets full of quarters cause it won’t come cheap.

It’s no secret the love I profess for the X-Men. From the action figures to the comics, you’ve see them all if you’ve been following my page for a while. And when it comes to beat em ups, did anyone do it better than Konami? I mean TMNT, Simpsons, X-Men... those three alone carried arcades for years to come! This game was mind blowing from the very first time I played it. I was 13 years old and this was an absolute game changer!

Coming in at the 7th spot, it’s the sequel to one of the biggest and most important games of all time, Donkey Kong Jr. I absolutely LOVE this game and always did from the very first time I played it at the arcades in the 80s. Something about it hooked me.

As a kid, I had DK JR pajamas, t-shirts, hats, stuffed animals, hell.. I even had the original table top game. Donkey Kong Junior was my absolute jam. I was all in from the jump. (If you scroll a few months back you can see a pic of me wearing the PJ’s playing my table-top)

Some people probably don’t like this game. But then again, some people choose to listen to creed and nickleback so it’s apparent people make mistakes, except for me... I don’t make mistakes. This game is a legit classic.

Honestly for me, this is the best of the bunch. Sure, Donkey Kong is a true top three arcade game of all time and global icon, but for me, DK JR is the superior entry. And Donkey Kong 3 is just weird as hell. I enjoy it, but it had to be conceived on cocaine. It’s so strange compared to these two.

I have so many fond memories of playing this game in the arcades as a kid, that it’s always a go to when I see one out in the wild. It may not be anywhere on your list, but for me, it’s an important piece of my video game history.

BOOMSHACKALACKA!! Coming in at the 8th spot, it’s the quintessential ground breaking sports arcade classic, NBA Jam. I’ll never forget the first time I saw this game. I was like a mosquito to a bug zapper. There weren’t enough quarters in the US Mint to keep me satisfied. I needed more.

I started watching the NBA in the mid to late 80s and for many years it was my favorite sport. Watching the Bulls in the 90s is something I’ll cherish forever. So naturally this game was one that was meant for me.

NBA Jam is basically the Mortal Kombat of sports arcade games. It redefined what sports games could be and transcended the genre to places we had never been. Truly one of the most important arcade games of all time. “HE’S ON 🔥🔥”

Coming in at the 9th spot, fighting and clawing its way through the competition is the genre defining beat ‘em up GOAT “Double Dragon” 🐉 🐉 Show me a retro video game aficionado who doesn’t have love for the DD series and I’ll show you a damn imposter. Yeah, I said it.

Double Dragon is a legend in its own right. It’s an arcade behemoth that spawned an entire franchise to stretch across every home console from A to Z, to Saturday morning cartoons to even the Hollywood silver screen... (but let’s not talk about that movie, ok?)

These brothers Bimmy and Jimmy... excuse me, Billy and Jimmy are household names and video game icons that are important to not only the history of the beat ‘em up genre, but to the entire landscape of video game history. DD is one the most important arcade games of all time and its impact is still felt today. 🕹
